The playback problems are happening on both Apple and Android devices playing from the same NAS. This NOT an Apple problem! As I said, I was able to run PLEX on my NAS for years to stream content to Apple and Android mobile devices without issues. What they provide is often good but one can't deviate from a narrow path they offer. They tightly control everything and they think they know better what you want without asking you. Apple is like one of those repressive governments in the world of electronics. I try to stay away from Apple as far as I can. I never had so many glitches with Plex on non-Apple devices (read Android). Once we set the max resolution to HD Plex started 4K->HD transcoding on the server and everything worked. It was trying to play 4K on HD and the screen was blank. By trial and error we found that their Apple TV didn't communicate to the Plex client that the TV connected was HD, not 4K. Once I helped a friend troubleshoot Plex client issues. And why this worked before but stopped - Apple updates the system and the builtin player with it. Or maybe people's file don't comply with some Apple's "standards". The issue you linked looks like the case of Apple's builtin player inability to play certain formats properly.

Apple ignores standards and doesn't support the MKV container, a de-facto standard, so Direct Play is not possible on Apple devices when streaming MKV files, only direct stream which is still not bad.

If the builtin player doesn't support hardware decoding of some format, Plex client has to outsource transcoding to the server instead of trying software decoding on the client. Apple is very restrictive and forces the developers to use the system builtin media player. When I browsed Plex forums I had an impression that Plex had more problems on Apple devices than on any others because the developers hands are tied on the Apple platform. Plex pass is useful mostly for server owners.Ģ) This looks like an Apple problem. the strange thing is that I never had any issues in the first few years of using PLEX using the same hardware & settingsġ) This is a client side problem. the solution promoted in this post only fixed things partially for me.
